This Disqus system seems great! I made an account on this forum just to be able to leave a comment! One thing I love about your script is that you keep it updated regularly. It's great.

But my one question is, does the original commenting system still function properly?

But I can see the benefits of using Disqus...it looks like you can reach a much wider audience via the social networking integration..

If using Disqus comments you're completly bypassing the built in commenting system of the news script. You can switch between both at any time but comments posted using Disqus won't appear on built in comments, likewise built in comments won't appear on Disqus.
