One of the things that takes some getting used to is the way that tags are applied when creating news.
If you want something BOLD, you need to click the B button, then insert the text. Similarly, yet different again, when you choose an alignment tag, it simply pastes in the [start] and [/end] tags (e.g. [left][/left]) where you have your cursor. If you happen to have something selected, the selected text is deleted.
The way many other system work is if you highlight something, then click the formatting button, the tags are applied around the selection.
I'm not sure what "under the hood" changes would be necessary to accomplish this, but it might just be a matter of copying any selection, assembling the string of [tag]+selection+[/tag], and inserting that.

Well this hopefully won't be an issue in 3.7. I'm making an effort to integrate a wysiwyg editor. I've tried numerous times in the past and it was just never suitable. But for the next version I won't be releasing it until one has been implemented.
Well you probably already know this, but CK Editor seems to be the bees-knees these days for this sort of thing, and I'm led to believe very easy to incorporate.
