I'm wondering what the best way is to alter the way the search box is displayed?

If I wanted to format the text "Search", or remove it entirely (as the button with the word "SEARCH" on it makes it redundant), or use a different graphic for the search button.

I could probably hack my way through the code and brute-force something, but I thought I'd ask in case there's hook somewhere that makes it easy.
