I'm curious what others do or recommend as far as making a sitemap.xml file for their n-13 pages. Obviously getting good search engine coverage is something we all want, but I'm a little confused about the best approach.

For example when I generate a sitemap the main blog page is listed as:

<url>
<loc>http://www.spyglasshill.com/blog.php</loc>
<lastmod>2011-03-10</lastmod>
<changefreq>daily</changefreq>
<priority>0.5</priority>
</url>

but as I add articles to the blog the sitemap generator will add

<url>
<loc>http://www.spyglasshill.com/news/20-0-Beijing-s-perspective-on-Charlie-Sheen.php</loc>
<lastmod>2011-03-10</lastmod>
<changefreq>daily</changefreq>
<priority>0.5</priority>
</url>

as a friendly URL for the article posted. Is it a good idea to have a listing for every article? If so, this would necessitate creating a new sitemap.xml pretty frequently if you add articles on a regular basis. I don't know of any way to automate that.

Alternatively, I can create an entry based on categories, like

<url>
<loc>
http://www.spyglasshill.com/blog.php?cattodisplay=Conspiracies+%26+Coverups/
</loc>
<lastmod>2011-03-10</lastmod>
<priority>0.5</priority>
<changefreq>daily</changefreq>
</url>

But I'm not sure that's going to give a very detailed look at what's on the site.

So I'm curious what others do when dealing with dynamic pages and frequent site updates?

I use a sitemap generator and set up a cron to update my sitemaps when needed. You can find it here: xml-sitemaps.com. If you have less than 500 pages it is free and they have a stand alone version for about 20 dollars which is what I purchased and set up on my server, then configured a cron to update automatically.
